Basics to remember about essays

Essays are graded on a holistic scale of 0 to 6. Process points are given for brainstorming, a rough draft, and the final product. Open-ended responses are graded on a holistic scale of 0 to 4. On either scale, a zero is earned for a response that is off topic or irrelevant. Content and form are evaluated. The strongest responses earn a 6 or a 4. Use the following as your criteria: clear demonstration of the task, completion of all parts of the task, insightful explanation/opinion, textual references, audience and purpose awareness, logical organization, and grammatical command.

An easy way to remember composition development is to think in three's. Whether you are writing a paragraph, an essay or a paper, you will need an introductory, a body and a concluding aspect to the composition.

Paragraphs need a topic sentence, supporting details and a clincher or concluding statement. Fully developed paragraphs should be at least 6 sentences. For the ultimate "Haines" paragraph, 8 to 10 sentences is more like it! Remember, it's easy. Look to those supporting details.

     Essays
need an introductory paragraph with all of the above form requirements. The topic sentence, though, becomes your thesis. The body paragraphs are developed like all other paragraphs, keeping in mind that each paragraph supports your essay's focus. The final paragraph clinches the essay, summarizing and reinforcing for the reader.

       Extended papers
are no different in form or development, but you will often be required to research and integrate documented support. When quoting, remember to frame those quotes, again thinking the magic number "3".

A final thought: transition words. There are many type of sentence connectives. These little words and phrases will definitely make the difference in an essay's logical development. Refer to the resource page in the class syllabus. Don't be afraid to use a variety of transition words.
