NEW: Librarian Bridget Zino and Literacy CoachTom Honeyman will be holding a Nings and Wiggios workshop on Wednesday, June 2. As academic social networks, nings and wiggios allow teachers to set up a virtual classroom where students and teachers interact using a message board, create study groups using the instant messaging features, and upload videos and documents.
Notetaking PD Session is scheduled for March 8th. Glogs & Blogs PD Session is scheduled for March 29th.
The Department continues to expand its repetoire of teaching strategies in its study of Kylene Beers. Teachers are also working hard on getting students ready for the HSPA, focusing especially on expository writing. This part of the HSPA is replacing the picture prompt. Much more aligned to academic/SAT writing, it pushes students to consider quotes in broader contexts. Thanks to our very own Starnya Ware, 10th grade teacher, a new acronym is helping our students approach these prompts with greater focus. Our literacy coach, Tom Honeyman, is making the rounds, visiting classrooms to reinforce the approach.
Many teachers, including our English teachers, attended an iGoogle workshop this February. Led by librarian Bridget Zino and English teacher Michele Lattanzio, teachers learned the ways in which such technology could be applied to courses. Coaches Rose Birkhead and Tom Honeyman will be teaching a workshop in March; this one will focus on the Cornell notetaking strategy as well as guided reading strategies. The strategies will promote cross-curricular literacy.
We can't forget mentioning that our very own Frank Stepnowski is now a published author! Finally, someone who answers the burning question: WHY ARE ALL THE GOOD TEACHERS CRAZY?
And, what about Ed Trautz and Joshua Kates, foreign language teacher, showing their pride at the pep rally. In fact, many of our teachers joined Michele Lantanzio (Speech & Drama teacher) on the floor to stomp to "We Will Teach You!" Nice way to show our teacher pride!! |
